We will choose the scenes based on the students' interests and abilities. Depending on the students, we may also choose a one-act opera to perform with scenes. We hope to cater to students' specific interests, and intend on giving students the opportunity to explore the styles and roles they are most excited about.
Opera scenes could be pulled from operas such as Mozart's The Magic Flute, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, and Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel. Operetta scenes could be pulled from shows such as Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado or Weill's Street Scene, and musical theater scenes could come from shows such as Roger and Hammerstein's Carousel or Kern's Show Boat.

Boston Backyard Opera
The Backyard Opera Summer Intensive is open to all interested students ages 12-18. During the two-week program, students will receive training in voice, dance, drama, and backstage skills, while working towards an Opera Gala performance of opera scenes!
Each student will be cast as a soloists in two scenes, work on a solo song, and perform in the chorus of additional scenes. We tailor the scene choices and roles to the students' strengths.
In addition to daily group classes and rehearsals, each student will receive a masterclass with one of our faculty members. Interested students will also receive the opportunity to help direct and/or stage manage a scene.
With a maximum enrollment of 15 students, we ensure that each student receives personalized instruction. Over the course of the program we will develop a sense of community, and create an environment in which students feel free to explore their talents and try new things as performers.
